Medea
🎭 Introduction to the Play
In 2019, I performed in Medea, adapted by Masoud Samiei from Euripides’ original work and directed by Ali Asghar Rasekh Rad. I portrayed three distinct roles: Medea’s nursemaid, her romantic rival, and a female student.
The production was staged from May 10 to June 21, 2019, at the Qashqai Hall, Theatre City, Tehran, Iran.
📝 About the show
The play Medea unfolds around a theatre company rehearsing a stage adaptation of the classic tragedy.
Maryam, who plays Medea, is rehearsing alongside her husband, the director of the production.
During the rehearsal process, Sara, a young directing student, performs the role of Medea’s nursemaid.
As rehearsals progress, it becomes evident that the director has developed an emotional attachment to Sara.
Upon discovering this relationship, Maryam gradually finds herself placed in a parallel position to the character she embodies.
As the boundary between lived reality and theatrical role begins to blur,
Maryam’s personal experience mirrors Medea’s inner conflict.
This convergence leads the performance toward an ending shaped by her own choices.
The director’s approach draws inspiration from the principles of classical theatre,
seeking a balance between form and content,
while also creating space for the active presence and contribution
of theatre students and emerging performers within the structure of the production.
